A New Way to Monitor Eye Pressure: Intraocular Pressure Goggles

Monitoring intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the most important aspects of glaucoma care. Traditionally, eye pressure is measured during office visits, providing only a single reading at one point in time. However, IOP naturally fluctuates throughout the day and night, and these changes may go undetected.
New intraocular pressure monitoring goggles are being developed to provide a more continuous, non-invasive way to track eye pressure. Rather than relying on a single measurement, these wearable devices can monitor changes over extended periods, offering a more complete picture of pressure patterns.
Continuous IOP monitoring may help eye care providers:
Detect pressure spikes that occur outside clinic hours.
Better assess glaucoma progression and treatment effectiveness.
Personalize treatment plans based on an individual's unique pressure profile.
Although these technologies are still being evaluated and are not yet part of routine clinical practice, they represent an exciting advancement in glaucoma management. As research continues, wearable IOP monitoring could improve early detection, optimize treatment decisions, and ultimately help preserve vision!
