Itchy Eye Season!

Ocular allergies—called allergic conjunctivitis—are a common but frustrating condition that affects millions of people, especially during seasonal changes. If your eyes frequently itch, water, or turn red, allergies may be the culprit rather than an infection.

At the core of ocular allergies is an overreaction of the immune system. When your eyes come into contact with allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold, the body releases histamine and other chemicals. This response leads to inflammation of the thin membrane covering the white part of the eye and inner eyelids.

The hallmark symptom is itching—often intense and persistent. Other common signs include redness, tearing, a burning sensation, and sometimes mild swelling of the eyelids. Unlike bacterial or viral conjunctivitis, ocular allergies usually affect both eyes and are not contagious.

Management starts with minimizing exposure to triggers. Keeping windows closed during high pollen days, using air purifiers, and washing hands and face after being outdoors can help reduce symptoms. For relief, eye doctors recommend Pataday or Lastacaft brands as the strongest over the counter options. Stay away from eye drops simply marked "redness relief" or even popular brands claiming "for allergies". Always contact your eye care professional for specific recommendations. Patients should also use cool compresses over the eyes to calm down the sensation of itching and artificial tears can be used to flush out the allergens. For more severe cases, an office visit with your eye doctor for prescription medications.

While ocular allergies are rarely dangerous, they can significantly impact comfort and quality of life. The good news is that with proper care and preventive measures, symptoms are usually manageable, allowing you to see clearly and comfortably year-round.
